Advice and submissions

The Guardians actively provide expertise and advice to Greater Wellington Regional Council (GW), Porirua City Council (PCC), Pauatahanui  Inlet Community Trust and other organisations.

Over the past two years we have assisted PCC and GW in the formation of the Porirua Harbour and Catchment Management Programme and we are suporting the new Porirua Harbour and Catchment Community Trust (PHACCT), which has a whole-harbour focus. Our Chair, John Wells, is a member of the trust board. We are also active on the PCC project advisory group working on plans for new sections of the Inlet pathway

We make formal submissions to the Government whenever legislation is proposed that we consider relevant to the health of the Inlet and its catchment. For example, we made a submission on the changes to the Resource Management Act. In March 2011 we made a submission to the Environmental Protection Agency on a proposed change to the Regional Freshwater Plan, requested by the NZ Transport Agency as part of the Transmission Gully project. We rejected the plan change - read our argument.

Most recently we have made a submission to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) asking for further mitigation measures to be put in place during the construction of Transmission Gully. We are concerned that it seems the Inlet will be affected more than was originally understood. We encourage you to read our submission.

We make submissions on the draft PCC Annual Plan and Long Term Council Community Plan and have been gratified to see our voice is heard and our suggestions usually acted upon.
