Press release to Kapi-Mana News: Giving the Inlet a hand

It's not often we get the chance to do something positive for a body of water. Normally it's the body of water doing something positive for us - providing us with an environment to sail on, swim in, fish out of, walk around, or just sit and enjoy. However, Tony Shaw of the Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet says he's looking forward to Sunday 31 October, when Pauatahanui Inlet will be getting a spruce-up, with the help of local residents. He's hoping that Kapi-Mana readers will come along and lend a hand.
Tony says that the Inlet gets a spring clean every year, and taking part is a great activity for young and old. The annual clean-up is organised by the Guardians and Keep Porirua Beautiful, with the support of Plimmerton Rotary. Everyone who helps is rewarded with a BBQ at the end of the 1 - 2 hour clean-up, and there's a chance to win the grocery raffle, courtesy Mana New World.
Choosing a suitable time for the clean-up can be a challenge, since it has to be pretty nearly low tide. As Tony says, 'It would be a pretty pointless exercise to try and pick up rubbish that's covered with water.' This year the Guardians had the added challenge of choosing a date that doesn't clash with the three-yearly cockle survey, so the clean-up's being held a bit earlier than usual.
