The 2012 Guardians photo competition has been judged! Kris Faafoi MP presented prizes to winners and those whose prints were highly commended at a ceremony at Pataka on 29 April. The ceremony was well attended by family and friends.
Our annual competition, now in its 12th year, is immensely popular with those who live around the Inlet, and those who come from near and far to visit. Over the years entrants have outdone themselves to capture the beauty of the Inlet, family activities, animal life and, at times, the negative impact of human carelessness. This year's competition saw nearly 300 prints submitted. See the winners' names and photos.

Originally set up as part of Sea Week, the competition is now a successful stand-alone event. It attracts generous sponsorship from local businesses.
Until recently the competition had been run in February/March. However, in order to give keen photographers more time to capture summer fun and warm weather on the inlet, the competition is now held in March-April.
The winning photos are on display at Palmers Lifestyle Centre (10 May - 24 May), Whitby Mall (25 May - 8 June) and Lighthouse Cinema Pauatahanui (9 - 22 June). Pataka is again supporting the competition by running a slide show of the winning photos in the spine of the gallery.
We are pleased to be receiving the support of KapiMana News again this year. The newspaper is running a People's Choice competition, judged by its readers, with generous additional prizes. We urge all those interested in the Inlet to cast a vote at http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/kapi-mana-news/6877438/Which-is-your-favourite-Inlet-photo.

We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of Harvey Norman Porirua, who offered free printing of up to eight prints for each entrant. Harvey Norman Porirua also donated a Panasonic camera as a prize for the best print by an entrant under 18. The winner was Merryn Giblin or Paremata, who received her camera from Gareth Cheyne, of Harvey Norman, at the prizegiving. Our congratulations go to Merryn for her superb shot of a spider caught in the light.
We had generous major and smaller sponsors, all of them keen to see our beautiful local Inlet cared for and appreciated. Please support them.
