Photo Competition

GOPI runs an annual photographic competition which is immensely popular with those who live around the Inlet, and those who come from near and far to visit. You can see the list of 2011 winners and highly commended entries below.

Originally set up as part of Sea Week, the competition is now a successful stand-alone event. It attracts generous sponsorship from local businesses.

Until recently the competition had been run in February/March. In 2011, however, we decided that we wanted to give keen photographers more time to capture summer fun and warm weather on the inlet, so the competition was held in March-April. Over the years entrants have outdone themselves to capture the beauty of the Inlet, family activities, animal life and, at times, the negative impact of human carelessness. The 2011 entries were no different, with over 330 truly beautiful, high quality images being submitted.

You can see the winning photos here on the website.

The winning photos were displayed at Porirua Library, Palmers Lifestyle Centre, Whitby Mall and Lighthouse Pauatahanui. They proved a big attraction to visitors. Pataka also supported the competition by running a slide show of the winning photos in the spine of the gallery, and also hosting the prizegiving ceremony, where winners received their certificates and prizes from Mayor Nick Legget.

We were also delighted to have received the support of KapiMana News, who ran a People's Choice competition, with generous additional prizes donated by Lighthouse Pauatahanui and Duck Creek restaurant. The first placegetters in each of the four categories were judged by readers of KapiMana News, and the winners were Charles Jarvie and Brent Higham. We hope that this innovative idea from KapiMana News will continue each year.
